The problem with “diets” is that they’re not meant to be followed for a long period of time. You want to lose weight & keep it off. Diets usually get you cutting out a particular food group (usually the best ones) :/ but, once you stop the diet, you gain the weight back! Usually back with a vengeance! So the key to steady weight loss that stays off is to eat real (not processed) foods that incorporate a balance of healthy fats, nutrient-dense carbs, & lean protein.
The Water Trick
Ever eat a meal or snack, only to still feel peckish after? Happens to the best of us (me) all the time! Since I am a complete foodie – food is my life! It’s very hard for me to stay full for long. Especially when there are so many temptations all around me! So I’ve started using the water trick – It does exactly as the name suggests! – I trick my body into thinking it’s full! I have a glass of hot/warm water with half a lemon squeezed & I gulp that down either before my meal, or with food if I didn’t get time to make it beforehand. This immediately gives you a bloated feeling, leaving not much room for over indulging, so it’s the best way to eat a normal portioned size meal, or an easy way to curb that craving.
Water is definitely the best drink in the world! Other drinks can’t satisfy you the way food does, so they’re a waste. Other liquids may be high in sodium & carbs, which trick your body into retaining water, & puffing you up. Water, on the other hand, has no calories or carbs & little to no sodium, making it the perfect slim-down drink. Also, it actually helps flush out excess water weight as well as boost your metabolism!
Get Those Zzzz’s!
Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain. I seriously didn’t believe this until recently. Having suffered from Insomnia while pregnant, I recognise the signs & I am again finding it hard to sleep. I get to sleep by 1-2am & I am awake again by 6am. Only getting a few hours each night has led to a considerate amount of weight gain & binge eating!
I’ve learned there are hunger hormones – Ghrelin & Leptin.
Ghrelin is a hormone released in the stomach that signals hunger in the brain. Levels are high before you eat, when the stomach is empty, & obviously it goes lower after you eat. Leptin is a hormone released from fat cells. It suppresses hunger & signals fullness in the brain. When you don’t get enough sleep, the body makes more Ghrelin & less Leptin, leaving you hungry & increasing your appetite. So sleeping more can boost that Leptin & really aid in weight loss. Sleeping to lose weight? – I don’t need much convincing! 🙂
Fill up with fiber
We know fiber rich foods can help us lose weight, fiber will help you get through cravings. adding Chia seeds, Flax seeds, beans & oats to your everyday diet will fill you up easily without having to do much! For a fast way to fill up, soak Chia & Flax seeds in liquids before consumption to make them plump up & trick your stomach into thinking its full quicker & for longer. These fibers are easily incorporated into your diet if you make smoothies, eat them with yoghurt or make porridge.
A Cup of Joe!
Drinking caffeine tricks the body into speeding up the metabolism. The caffeine in just one cup of coffee can boost calorie burning by four percent like green tea. Coffee’s effects on metabolism & fat burning can contribute to successful weight loss. Everything in moderation though! although coffee helps with fat burning, too much isn’t always a good thing! Drinking this Wonder Tea can also help!
Knowing When To Stop
There is a Hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammed PBUH) that states –
“A human being fills no worse a vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must [fill it] then one third for food, one third for drink and one third for air.
So paying attention to your hunger & listening to your body will help you stop yourself from overeating. You can train yourself to properly satisfy your hunger without stuffing yourself silly! This doesn’t happen overnight obviously, but you can learn to do it. You should eat when you are slightly hungry & stop eating when you are slightly full.
